About the Workbook

Pathways to Recovery is a valuable resource for people who are embracing and mobilizing around a vision of recovery!  Here’s some information about Pathways:

§         Pathways translates the evidence-based practice of the Strengths Model into a self-help approach towards recovery from the symptoms of mental illness.

§         Pathways does not concentrate on psychiatric symptoms, treatments or disorders.  Instead, Pathways guides readers through a process of self-assessment, self-discovery and planning that helps individuals set life goals and realize their dreams.

§         Pathways promotes recovery in many areas of life including the elements of home, education, finding work, exploring relationships and supports, wellness, recreation, sexuality & intimacy and spirituality.

§         Pathways includes more than 30 first-person accounts of recovery and provides inspiration guidelines so readers can create and share their own stories.

§         Pathways to Recovery has been recognized by Boston University’s Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation & Recovery and was listed in their Recovery & Rehabilitation newsletter as one of the top three recovery resources.

§         Pathways has been distributed and used throughout the United States and internationally, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Israel, Japan and The Netherlands.

§         Pathways is uniquely designed to be adaptable for use in group settings, for peer support training, with case mangers or therapists as well as for individual use.

 About the Group Facilitator's Guide

Since the first printing of Pathways to Recovery, spontaneous groups have sprung up across the globe.  Some were held in formal settings while others were conducted with just two or three people in someone’s living room.  In most, participants found themselves completing the exercises, discussing the quotations or even arguing about whether certain topics should be included in one chapter or another.  With so many different formats emerging, determining how to create a facilitator’s guide was quite a challenge.

The guide was designed to be easy to navigate and use, even for first-time group facilitators.  Four modules each provide twenty-four, 2-hour sessions and include the following:

§         An overview and goals for the topic

§         Recommended readings, materials & handouts

§         Specific tips for facilitators & notes to guide the session

§         Detailed agendas with suggested times & activities

§         A coil binding to make it easier for facilitators to use within a group session.

The guide gives group leaders all the information needed to facilitate a two-hour Pathways to Recovery group, including tips on how to adapt the sessions to meet specific needs.  While some groups have taken over a year to cover all the material in the workbook, still others have found it possible to cover one chapter a week.  However you decide to conduct your local group, the material you find in this guide will be helpful.

 About the Authors

Priscilla Ridgway

For over 35 years, Priscilla has worked in a variety of mental health settings, including direct practice, program administration, disability rights, supported housing, policy analysis and best practice research.  She was part of a team of recovery experts that published What Helps and What Hinders Mental Health Recovery for CMHS and has authored the Recovery Enhancing Environment (REE) Measure, a systems-level recovery performance indicator.  Priscilla received her PhD from the University of Kansas where her dissertation focused on hope and mental health recovery.  She currently serves as Assistant Professor at Yale University’s Department of Psychiatry, Program for Recovery and Community Mental Health in New Haven, Connecticut.

Diane McDiarmid

Diane recently retired from the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare Office of Mental Health Research & Training where she was the Director of Supported Education Research & Training.  She also served as the Project Director of the national award-winning Consumer as Provider (CAP) Training Project.  Diane worked to develop and teach the strengths model of case management both nationally and internationally.  Her passion for supported education ultimately led her to work on creating the Student Success Training that provides opportunities for people with psychiatric disabilities to gain access to and educational achievement by further exploring goals and opportunities in post-secondary education.  She currently resides in Austin, Texas.

Lori Davidson

Lori is a Recovery Project Coordinator at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare Office of Mental Health Research & Training.  For three years, she coordinated the Kansas WRAP Project and recently helped develop the Kansas Recovery Educator Program, an extensive training for Kansas consumer-operated service programs.  Lori has over 20 years of professional and personal experience in a variety of community-based mental health settings.  In 2006, she was the recipient of the Chamberlain-Rapp Exemplary Leadership Award, given by the Kansas Consumer Advisory Council for Adult Mental Health.  She is currently working with the Pathways to Recovery Project to develop research, training and technical assistance.

Julie Bayes

During the writing of Pathways to Recovery, Julie worked as a consumer provider in the psychosocial rehabilitation program at Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center in Lawrence, Kansas.  In 1986, while working as a journalist and television producer, Julie was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder.  After struggling with her illness for ten years, she made the decision to work on her  recovery.  Through individual therapy and skills work, she learned how to better relate to the world, often relying on her personal motto, “what we think, we become.”  Julie also worked with Priscilla Ridgway to create “Hope and Recovery: A Sourcebook for Hope-Instilling Practice.”

Sarah Ratzlaff

As a research assistant for KUs School of Social Welfare Office of Mental Health Research & Training, Sarah was responsible for much of the research and formatting for Pathways to Recovery and she created the process for initial sales and distribution.  Her hard work and diligence added much to the overall project.  Since then, Sarah received her M.Ed. in Sports Management from Wichita State University.  She now works as a sales manager for Disney Sports Attractions in Orlando, Florida.

 About the Artists

Most of the illustrations in Pathways to Recovery were created by Jan Kobe, an award-winning artist who has worked with both Hallmark Cards and NARSAD Artworks.  In addition, she works as a consumer provider in Kansas City, Kansas, sharing her creative talent, energy and spirit with other consumers to develop their own artist talents.  In addition, formatting and drawings were also contributed by Lori Davidson and Priscilla Ridgway.  As a group project, Jan, Lori, Tonya Hinman, Suzette Mack, Janice Driscoll and Joy Butterfield capitalized on their creative strengths to design the cover art.

Funding for the Pathways to Recovery Project

Funding for both publications was provided by the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare and the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services/Health Care Policy, Mental Health.
