Project Dates: Jul 2008 - ongoing
Background
Shared decision making (SDM) is a process that enables practitioners and clients to work together to make decisions about medical treatment. Practitioners and clients are both actively involved in the decision making process, and treatment decisions are based on agreement from each party*.
SDM has been used in various medical settings, predominately around physical health. While it does have a growing presence in the adult mental health arena, little work has been published to offer a process for using SDM in mental health with parents and youth.
With funding provided by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services – Division of Disability and Behavioral Health Services/Mental Health, the goal of this project is to create a youth shared decision model for mental health medication treatment. To create a model that will be functional for youth and family-friendly, it is imperative that:
- Parents/guardians, youth, and mental health program staff are involved in the development of the model;
- The model components can be adapted to the developmental changes of transition-age youth;
- The influence and interaction of multiple children’s systems, such as schools, child welfare, and juvenile justice, are considered.
